Are you researching your family tree or are you just a curious browser? Here at the Columbiana Public Library, we have numerous genealogy sources that will please both the serious researcher and the casual browser of all things related to genealogy.
Columbiana Public Library has a vast collection of sources on the history of the city of Columbiana and its surrounding neighbor cities as well as Columbiana County itself. These sources are kept in our Reference section, and cannot be checked out. They can be browsed, however, in the library.
The library has three local, historical newspapers on microfilm, and some U.S. Census information.
These include:
- Columbiana Ledger 1862-1958 (incomplete)
- Independent Register 1870-1898 (incomplete)
- Columbiana Heritage 1898-1996
- U.S. Census 1820-1930
Other in-house library resources include:
- Cemetery and Death Records for select cemeteries in Columbiana & Mahoning Counties.
- Cemetery inscriptions for select cemeteries in Columbiana County.
- Columbiana County Bible records.
- U.S. Census various 1800s.
- Wills Index/Marriage Records. (incomplete)
- Combined Atlases of Columbiana County, 1841-1860, 1870-1902
While the Columbiana Public Library does not have a dedicated genealogy section, our librarians can help provide factual answers to genealogy inquiries via email, or copies can also be provided by mail or fax for a small fee depending on the number of pages. Patrons are encouraged to come to the Library to conduct their own research and are charged the in-house rate for copies, which is currently 10 cents per page for black and white or 25 cents per page for color. Prints from the self-serve microfilm printer are also 10 cents per page, and are only available in black and white.
The Columbiana-Fairfield Township Historical Society Museum is a local resource which also keeps a large archive of documents on various Columbiana County cities and townships. The Historical Society Museum helps people with genealogical research on certain days of the week year round. The Museum is also open to the public, but keeps limited hours.
Vertical Files:
These files include current material on various topics in the form of booklets, pamphlets, clippings, and maps.
Annual reports:
Local History File contains newspaper articles and pamphlets of Columbiana County information. Family History File includes information on local families and information of a genealogical nature.
What are vital records?
Vital records are records of life events kept under governmental authority, including birth certificates, marriage licenses, and death certificates. In some jurisdictions, vital records may also include records of civil unions or domestic partnerships.
