NATURE OF WORK

Part-time position. Under the supervision of the Director, plans, coordinates, and maintains the Library’s Young Adult services in accordance with Library policy and procedures.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

1. Performs other library duties as requested
2. Plans, schedules, & publicizes activities for young adults based on their needs and interests
3. Manages the budget for the Young Adult section of the library
4. Assists the Youth Services Manager with programs and preparation as needed
5. Coordinates activities with local schools to maximize interest in programs and the love of reading to students
6. Compiles data and prepares reports on activities and programs
7. Knowledge of pop culture and technology trends for teens
8. Provides input into books, video games, and video collections, and maintains the teen room
9. Maintains a knowledge of reference services and assists patrons in their use
10. Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops
11. Serves as the designated person in charge, being responsible for building security, staff, and reference work when requested.
12. Performs circulation desk functions as needed
13. Keeps the Director informed of activities and recommends changes pertaining to the Young Adult section

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Comprehensive understanding of youth services programs, life skills for teens, literature, and current technology trends
2. Knowledge of library equipment and automation system, or ability to learn
3. Ability to recognize the needs of library patrons and direct them to the appropriate resource
4. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with staff and patrons
5. Good judgment in making decisions in conformance with Library policies and procedures
6. Ability to push and pull carts with books, ability to bend and lift books, and reach high or low shelves when shelving books

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited institution preferred. Public library experience preferred. Experience working with young adults required.

The Columbiana Public Library provides free, open, and equal access to all users. Tutors will be key members of the Library’s tutoring and learning program. Under moderate supervision, the tutors will provide homework help, instructional, and tutoring services to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade through 1:1 or small-group intervention.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Supports the education and enrichment of the students by creating, organizing, and implementing supplementary materials and evidence-based curriculum for student use.
• Communicates on a regular basis with parents, guardians, and educators of youth attending tutoring sessions.
• Assess student academic progress and effectively use data to inform instruction.
• Collaborates with the library director, local educators, and library staff to support the individualized needs of students.
• Facilitates student learning by establishing a supportive environment and helping students identify gaps in their understanding of course concepts.
• Offers a variety of approaches or methods to help students understand course concepts.
• Promotes students’ self-reliance by referring them to textbooks, notes, and other course information sources, and demonstrating how to use them. Asks open-ended questions to check for students’ understanding, giving students adequate time to think.
• Works with students to develop effective problem-solving and critical thinking strategies.
• Maintains regular contact with the library director to discuss tutoring issues and receive assistance and feedback.
• Complies with Columbiana Public Library’s policies, rules, guidelines, procedures, requirements, standards, and practices applicable to the job, including (but not limited to) work scheduling and attendance, customer service, use of Library property, computer use, personal conduct, and confidentiality.

• Must be inquisitive and eager to learn new things.
• Excellent time management skills are a must.

• Education, Training, and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field required
• Experience working with children in grades Kindergarten through 12th is essential
• Ohio teaching licensure and credentials strongly preferred
• Successful completion of a background check is required

Compensation: This is an independent contractor position working up to 15 hours per week. Rate of compensation is $30 an hour. Will work afternoons and evenings.
